A lecture on integral geometry

چکیده

Integral geometry originated from geometric probability. It studies random geometric objects in a probability space endowed with a measure that is invariant under a group of transformations. The geometric objects are points, lines, planes, solids, curves, surfaces, geodesics, etc. Works of Crofton, Poincaré, Sylvester, and others set up the early stage of integral geometry. Poincaré defined the basic concept of kinematic density by considering it as a group invariant. This led to the study of measures on geometric objects invariant under a group. Integral geometry has developed into an elegant mathematical discipline by the works of Blaschke, Weil, Chern, Santaló, and others. It is closely related to convex geometry and global differential geometry. It is fundamental for stochastic geometry, geometric tomography and stereology. Integral geometry has found applications in many subjects other than mathematics, such as imaging science, material science, biological science, medical science, and information science. Santaló’s book [6] in 1976 is a milestone of integral geometry and is still the most important book on the subject. Howard’s book [2] in 1993 studies integral formulas in Riemannian geometry. The book [4] of Klain and Rota in 1997 explains the connections of integral geometry and convex geometry. The books [3, 5, 9] deal with various geometric probabilities in the Euclidean space. The book [8] by Schneider and Weil in 2008 includes recent

Selections from the Arithmetic Geometry of Shimura Curves I: Modular Curves

This first lecture is on (classical) modular curves. It is a rather “straight up” expository account of the subject, suitable for people who have heard about modular curves before but seen little about them. After reviewing some truly classical results about modular curves over the complex numbers, we will discuss rational and integral canonical models, focusing in on the case of X0(N) for squa...

On the k-nullity foliations in Finsler geometry

Here, a Finsler manifold $(M,F)$ is considered with corresponding curvature tensor, regarded as $2$-forms on the bundle of non-zero tangent vectors. Certain subspaces of the tangent spaces of $M$ determined by the curvature are introduced and called $k$-nullity foliations of the curvature operator. It is shown that if the dimension of foliation is constant, then the distribution is involutive...

A discrete history of the Lorentzian path integral

In these lecture notes, I describe the motivation behind a recent formulation of a non-perturbative gravitational path integral for Lorentzian (instead of the usual Euclidean) space-times, and give a pedagogical introduction to its main features. At the regularized, discrete level this approach solves the problems of (i) having a welldefined Wick rotation, (ii) possessing a coordinate-invariant...

A numerical solution of mixed Volterra Fredholm integral equations of Urysohn type on non-rectangular regions using meshless methods

In this paper, we propose a new numerical method for solution of Urysohn two dimensional mixed Volterra-Fredholm integral equations of the second kind on a non-rectangular domain. The method approximates the solution by the discrete collocation method based on inverse multiquadric radial basis functions (RBFs) constructed on a set of disordered data. The method is a meshless method, because it ...
